Essence of Islamic Civilization: Principles, Institutions and Worldview

This course provides a comprehensive and purpose-driven outlook into the civilisational nature of Islam, and its worldview based on the essential features of Islam:  purposefulness, connectivity, and holism. It is designed with the clear perspective that every prophetic message carries a civilisational message: to change, progress, and improve human life and provide humanity with spiritual, social, and physical well-being. In the span of learning time, students will delve into the fundamental principles of Islamic civilisation, comprehending its essence, purpose, worldview, and the transformative role of Revelation in societal and scholarly advancement.

Prof. Elmira Akhmetova, PhD, is an exceptional scholar of Islamic Civilization with an extensive academic and research background. She held prestigious positions such as Senior Research Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, Germany, and was an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellow. Currently, she serves as the Director of Research and Grants and an instructor at the Institute of Knowledge Integration (IKI) Academy in Georgia. Her previous roles include Head of the Department of History and Civilization at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of South Australia, and Research Fellow at the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia. With such a diverse and rich professional history, Prof. Akhmetova brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to the study of Islamic Civilization, making her an invaluable resource for students and scholars alike.

Ildus Rafikov

Dr. Ildus Rafikov is vice president of research at the Maqasid Institute. holds a Ph.D. from ISTAC/IIUM in Philosophy, Ethics, and Contemporary issues with a special interest in Islamic economics, banking, and finance. He also holds a Chartered Islamic Finance Professional (CIFP) degree in Islamic banking and finance from the International Center for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), Kuala Lumpur, and a bachelor’s degree in Communications from IIUM. Dr. Ildus Rafikov has written and published a number of academic articles in indexed and non-indexed journals on economic methodology, speculation, scarcity, sustainability, financial crises, banking and finance, monetary policy, awqaf,  reform in education from historical and contemporary perspectives.

Course Description

The course consists of 10 synchronous online lectures (120 minutes each), , with study materials available online via a learning management system.

  • Module 1: The Qur’anic Worldview and Civilizational Nature of Islam.
  • Module 2: Fundamental Principles of Islamic Civilization.
  • Module 3: Scientific and Intellectual Development within the Paradigm of Purposefulness, Connectivity, and Holism.

Participants are expected to

Certificates

  1. A Certificate of Attendance will be available to those who have completed 80% of the lectures and exercises.
  2. Learners who complete all course requirements will be awarded a Certificate in Essence of Islamic Civilization.
