It draws on a comprehensive understanding from the Quran and Sunnah and explores its application within the field of Islamic Psychology

Jasser Auda

Founding Chairman

Professor Jasser Auda is a scholar of Islam. His latest contribution is a New Maqasid Methodology that aims to bring about a restructuring of Islamic scholarship around a complex network of the higher objectives/Maqasid of the Quran and Prophetic traditions. He is Al-Shatibi Chair for Maqasid Studies at the International Peace University in South Africa, a Founding and Board Member of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, an Executive Member of the Fiqh Council of North America, a Member of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, and the Chairman of the Canadian Fiqh Council.

Instructors

Professor G. Hussein Rassool

Dr. G. Hussein Rassool, with a PhD in Psychology and Education from the University of London, is an international expert in mental health and addiction. He currently works as an academic advisor, psychology lecturer, and Clinical Consultant at Sakina Counselling Institute. He also practices Islamic psychotherapy. Dr. Rassool was a Senior Lecturer at St. George’s Hospital Medical School, where he developed innovative academic programs. He has authored eight books and published over 100 papers, focusing on addiction, mental health, and Islamic perspectives on healthcare. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health and has held visiting professorships internationally.

Dr. Bagus Riyono

Dr. Bagus Riyono, president of the International Association of Muslim Psychologists (IAMP), is a psychology lecturer at Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia. His research focuses on Islamic psychology, covering motivation, personality, leadership, and organizational development. An industrial and organizational psychologist, he has consulted for major organizations since 1995. He earned his master’s in I/O Psychology from Hofstra University, New York. Dr. Riyono also leads SIETAR-Indonesia and Gerakan Indonesia Beradab, a movement for human dignity. His 2011 dissertation integrated conventional and spiritual theories of motivation. He co-founded Maqasid Institute Indonesia, focusing on sustainable development.

About this program

This course introduces the Maqasid Methodology as an Islamic framework for addressing questions and challenges within Islamic psychology. Rooted in Quranic and Prophetic teachings, the methodology equips researchers and practitioners with tools to integrate Islamic principles into the study of human behavior, mental health, and overall well-being.

This course is offered in cooperation with the Maqasid Institute, the Al-Balkhi Institute of Islamic Psychological Studies and Research, and the International Students of Islamic Psychology, combining expertise and resources from leading institutions in the field.

 

Designed for postgraduate students and researchers, the course provides a critical alternative to contemporary psychological approaches, highlighting the limitations of modern frameworks and offering a holistic, spiritually-aligned methodology.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will:

    • Discuss the Maqasid Methodology framework and its application in Islamic psychology.
    • Identify limitations in contemporary psychological approaches.
    • Explore future-oriented, comprehensive frameworks in research and community initiatives.
    • Develop a personal research agenda incorporating Islamic principles.

Course Outline

The course is delivered online over 6 units comprising 15 lectures, offering a mix of online video lectures, readings, quizzes, reflection exercises, and a final assignment. The units include:

  1. Introduction to Maqasid Methodology
  2. Limitations in Islamic Psychology
  3. Re-orienting the Islamic Worldview and Islamic Psychology
  4. Research Methodology
  5. The Composite Framework
  6. Re-envisioning Islamic Studies via Maqasid Methodology

 

Participants are expected to

  • Actively engage in all course activities, including discussions, assignments, and self-reflection exercises.
  • Attend 3 live sessions.

Certificates

  1. A Certificate of attendance will be available to those who have completed 80% of the lectures and exercises.
  2. Learners who complete all course requirements (reflection exercise, forum participation, and submit a short paper (4-7 pages) will be awarded a Certificate in Understanding the Maqasid Methodology within Islamic Psychology.
